How Often Should You Check Your Website’s Metrics?

SEO can be a tricky road to navigate, full of potential potholes and bumps. Many marketers simply do not have a firm enough grasp on the wheel to understand the inner workings of search engine optimization and avoid the obstacles.

That said, although managing a company’s web presence was unpredictable in days past, now it doesn’t have to be.

Until recently, Google has released updates (along with how these updates will affect websites) to its algorithms in large chunks. However, nowadays we’re seeing more frequent updates of smaller sizes. The smaller changes allow Google technologists to scale back the update if it affects websites in ways they didn’t intend.

Smaller updates also mean that webmasters won’t experience the problems they saw before, when large updates like Panda and Penguin caused a tidal wave of rankings havoc. Rather, webmasters will experience a steady flow of updates that result in relatively minor, gradual changes over time. This approach should work to benefit both parties: the internet browsing individual and Google itself.

With the changes, however, the data collected from SEO analytics has to adapt as well. As SEO evolves, businesses must be able to quickly learn and understand what SEO practice they should and shouldn’t be engaging in by frequently reevaluate their website data.

How often is “frequently”?

Our best advice for remembering to reevaluate your website data is to devise a schedule that will work for your particular site and base it on how often your data changes. For a website (or business) that is just beginning, shoot for checking the data once a week or so using Google Search Console and Google Analytics.
