Humor can be a powerful tool in marketing. But as Uncle Ben says, with great power comes great responsibility.
One such tool is an internet “meme,” defined as “ an activity, concept, catchphrase, or piece of media that spreads, often as mimicry or for humorous purposes, from person to person via the Internet.”
Memes are one of the most popular and shareable types of internet content among today’s online searchers. In fact, according to Google Trends, the search term “memes” recently surpassed “Jesus” in terms of popularity.
In a study that was a bit more academic, Stanford University researchers studied the propagation of memes in an effort to better understand how memes spread virally across the internet and through various media sources. Interestingly, they found that different categories of memes (political, entertainment, social movements, etc.) have varying levels of peak data and viral lifespan.
Long story short: In the last 6-7 years or so, memes have evolved from a trickle of images hidden in obscure Reddit threads, to a rushing torrent of humor-centric content shared between people on social media and by major media outlets — and now even between businesses and their customers.
And it’s understandable why they’re popular. Some are downright hilarious.
In the course of researching data about the viral popularity of memes, we stumbled up a handful of awesome search engine marketing memes that we just had to share with you.
Whether you’re a fellow digital marketer looking to let off some steam, a business owner wanting to learn more about SEO, or simply a connoisseur of humorous content just passing by, we hope you enjoy this list of curated memes as much as we did.
Using Humor to Connect to Your Audience
Memes can be powerful way to connect brands with their target audience. But humor can be a double-edge sword and should be handled carefully. The last thing you want to do if offend or ostracize prospective customers or clients.
