When did Google Suggest launch?
- A. 2002
- B. 2006
- C. 2008
Answer: C
If you’ve searched the web in the last five years—and let’s be serious, who hasn’t—you’re more than likely familiar with Google Suggest even if you didn’t know there was a name for it. Google Suggest (or Google Search Suggest) was launched in 2008. It was originally intended to be an additional tool to help SEO developers research keywords and keyword usage. In all actuality, Google Suggest has become a permanent fixture for everyone who performs searches on Google.
How Google Search works to improve user experience
Google Search catalogues users’ search rate, the way they search (i.e. search manner) and the frequency at which they search. All of these factors mean that if enough people search for a given phrase enough (…“yellow lamp” for example), that eventually “yellow lamp” will be suggested after other users’ type just “yellow.”
In addition to working to suggest frequently searched phrases from other users, Google Suggest evolves during times of high volume searches. This phenomena was most easily seen when Prince William got married. Search results returning details on their wedding were frequent due to all of the media attention. But as the frequency of searches for Prince William’s wedding went down, more normal wedding related searches (i.e. wedding planning) rebounded.
