But all of that effort will not mean much if you don’t have a good product or service – in the end, reputation is everything. Once your firm loses its good reputation because of faulty products, it’s hard to get it back.
This is something software developer Joel Spolsky realized recently in regard to his software firm Fog Creek Software. Fog Creek struggled financially in the beginning as their business model was focused on the wrong things. But after changing their products for the better, business took off.
People take notice when you focus on making a product better (i.e. filling a consumer need)
Another example comes from Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh. At the Beijing Olympics, viewers noticed an unusual taping on Walsh’s shoulder. Turns out, Walsh was wearing Kinesio tape to support her shoulder after undergoing surgery.
What happened? Well, traffic to Kinesio’s site jumped from 600-700 visits per day to almost 350,000!
So what’s the moral of all this?
The goal of search engine optimization isn’t merely rocketing site rankings to the top of Google. The goal of SEO is sales…therefore, you need have a rock solid product first or your SEO efforts will be a big waste of time.
