Is Your Web Site Annoying Net Surfers?

August 3, 2005

eMarketer recently published an article detailing the results of a survey that took a look at the complaints of Internet users.

Here are some of the most annoying features of commercial web sites, according to the survey of 2,500 adult American consumers.

  • Pop-up ads
  • Registration and log-on requirements

  • Installation of extra software to view site
  • Slow-loading pages
  • Dead links
  • Confusing navigation (hard to find pages, too many clicks)
  • Out-of-date content
  • No contact info (web form only)
  • Music or audio that plays automatically
  • Inability to use browser back button
  • Ineffective site search tool
  • Overdone sites (unnecessary features)
  • Moving text
  • Opening a new window for a link
  • Poor appearance (colors, fonts, format)

Respondents said they were extremely or somewhat likely to not visit a site again if it contained annoying features.

70% of users said they might not purchase through the web site or even from the company offline.

Although pop-ups were by far the most cited annoying feature, Advertising.com reports that pop-ups and pop-unders are one of the greatest sources of online ad revenues. As well, registration requirement is likely to increase, since it provides a means to gather user information and deliver targeted content.
