Why Are Search Engines Advertising on TV?
October 23, 2006
Over the past year, Ask.com has dropped Jeeves and carried out a couple of major TV campaigns in an attempt to steal market share from other top search engines. Marketing Sherpa took a look at whether it has worked.
It seems they were able to inch their share of online search up from 3% to 4.5%. Doesn't sound like much, but apparently both Yahoo! and MSN dropped over the year, so it's good news. I'd just like to know how much their revenues have increased as a result of that massive TV spend...
MarketingSherpa projects that Yahoo! and MSN will both launch TV campaigns, too. But I expect that the battle will be won ultimately on the user experience provided, not the media buys.
