Welcome to SEO Advantage’s Trivia feature Friday, where we discuss, dissect and comment on the internet and marketing, and how the two intertwine.
What was the result of a joint effort between search engines to let webmasters make XML URL lists to help crawl better?
- A. URL-XML generator
- B. XML search engine
- C. org
(See answer below)
One of the first collaborative efforts amongst search engines was Sitemaps.org. For Sitemaps.org, search engines joined forces to make it easier for webmasters to create XML lists of URLs. These lists make crawling through search engines much quicker and more efficient. This update was huge for internet search because it allowed users to receive the information they search for quicker and get more reliable results.
Sitemaps.org was designed to fill in the gaps where search engines could no longer perform optimally. These gaps included honoring nofollow tags, expanded robots protocol and Schema.org. The development and release of Sitemaps was (is) a rare outreach to webmasters by search engines.
