Using the right keywords for your website content is crucial for attracting the best kind of traffic to your site. Determining new, highly value keywords can be difficult though. This is because your customers (site visitors) will all search for your products/services differently. For instance, some people search “A/C repair”, while others may type in “fix my air conditioner.” If you’re an HVAC company, you want to rank for both search terms, as well as any others that people may input.
In order to figure out new keywords for your website, there are a number of tools at your disposal. Below are 6 free resources for doing so…
Keyword Suggestions
Keyword suggest tools work by combining searches from Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines that relate to what a user is looking for. Three such scrapers are:
- Übersuggest
Übersuggest combs through Google Suggest for the most popular keywords that Google returns for searchers. You’ve seen this in action even if you’ve never heard of the terminology. For instance, as you add a letter to your search query, it changes the results that are returned.
- Keyword Tool IO and SERPs Keyword Tool
Both of these tools perform the same function as Übersuggest; however, they work with search engines other than Google.
- SEOChat Suggestion Keyword Finder
SEOChat works the same way as the previous two scrapers, but goes one step further by suggesting its own keywords and then runs them through a suggestion tool twice. The end result is a larger keyword set in a more sophisticated list.
Keyword Stalking
While ‘stalking’ has a negative connotation, keyword stalking is simply when you research your competitor’s pages, see what keywords they are using and incorporate them into your own lists. Three well-loved keyword stalking tools include:
- Google AdWords Keyword Planner
Google promotes its AdWords Keyword Planner as: “a workshop for building new Search Network campaigns or expanding existing ones.” This free AdWords tool can also help you choose competitive bids and budgets to use with your ad campaigns.
- Link Sleuth
Link Sleuth isn’t technically a tool for researching keywords, but rather a crawler that provides you with HTML and server data for any website. More specifically, Link Sleuth collects meta descriptions and keywords, title tags and headings from public websites. Sifting through this data will show you the keywords used by any website that is relevant to yours.
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a keyword stalker developed by a U.K. internet marketing company. The full version will help you gather keywords from all websites; however, the free version is good for 500 URLs, which can work for your company if you’re not operating on a large scale.
With the right application, these free tools can help you update your business’s keyword list and drive up your website’s conversion rate.
